CNA Classes in Ohio for Training
The Ohio Department of Health is responsible for setting CNA standards and requirements. This is a job they take extremely seriously. In 2013 alone, 99 people in the state of Ohio lost their CNA certification as a result of convicted abuse, neglect or misappropriation during their employment. The main responsibility of a CNA is the direct care of patient’s in nursing homes, hospitals and long term care facilities. It is vital that individuals working as CNA’s are responsible and honest people. This is the reason one of the Ohio requirements of CNA’s is background checking and fingerprinting. A person needs to be cleared of any criminal history and particularly cannot have any instances of abuse of neglect in their past. If a person can meet these requirements and additionally has successfully completed high school or their GED, then they may enroll in an Ohio State approved CNA program and attempt the state exam.
CNA Training Classes for Ohio Certification
CNA classes in Ohio include a minimum of 75 hours. Many of these training programs can be found through the local Red Cross, technical schools or even community colleges in Ohio. Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati Ohio have the most opportunities for CNA classes. Some of the 75 hours will be spent in the classroom learning the skills required of a CNA. The remainder of the hours will be spent in an Ohio nursing home facility or other long term medical care facility. The clinical hours which the state of Ohio requires of CNA students are put in place to allow CNA students to practice the skills in a real life medical setting under a registered nurse’s supervision and guidance. After completing CNA classes in Ohio, a person is required to take the Ohio State Nurse Competency test which is administered by D & S Diversified Technology. When the test is passed and all required steps are complete, a person can apply for actual CNA certification and then be placed on the Ohio CNA Registry. This registry is designed for the convenience of employers to be able to verify perspective employee credentials. It also allows other states to check the validity of a person’s certificate in the instance that they are trying to transfer their Ohio CNA certification to another state.

With a staggering 16.47 per thousand jobs held as Certified Nursing Assistants, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates Ohio with the third highest nonmetropolitan area employment in the nursing assistant occupation in the United States. The Cincinnati – Middletown, OH-KY-IN area had the highest amount of CNA jobs in Ohio. The Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, & Dayton metropolitan areas all have relatively strong job markets as well.
